It's not explicit what happened to her; it says her mum had her girled, so I guess it's set in a world where such things are normal. Her mum decided it was best, and she either agreed or went along with the social convention... But you're right, we don't see the aftermath that much, here or in TG fiction in general. It's not where the majority of the action is, though it is interesting to look at sometimes...
