Enlightened self-interest won out as a thoughtful and brave boy pushes his part of the world to a tipping point where all sides "get it". Even though it took some work (and an insightful observation from Marcy), the dictatorial majority finally overcame its strong social taboos concerning gender "norms".
It makes me wonder what would happen in the opposite scenario where male births start to decline. Would a significant percentage of women volunteer to become male if that was possible? Maybe their propensity would be to transition en masse to lesbianism for nurturing relationships and milk the remaining men to fill the sperm banks to capacity. But what would happen when that last frozen sperm goes for the final swim? ~Clare Lake
As you suggest, it'd be a lot easier for a female population to survive with frozen sperm. Would women transition to keep things normal? My feeling is that they'd find it a lot less necessary, and a lot less objectionable. A few would. However, in the DE universe, there's still a small population of natural female births; if this hypothetical male-decline universe as the case, would there still be a few guys every generation, ready to refill the coffers? I suspect that after a few hundred years - that's how long it would take for the sperm coffers to empty - lesbianism would be normal and it would be possible to impregnate a woman with genetic material from another woman. In fact, I believe that it's more or less possible now... eg: http://www.mirror.co.uk/news/world-news/scientists-claim-can-create-babies-7441572
Heh, once the taboo is broken a lot more might go for it. They'll basically have to convince the boys that they can practically continue their lives. Only with guaranteed lovers. That should do the rest.
Make some Hollywood movies about girls like her that would appeal to boys the right age. Normalize this and you'll likely find a lot of guys volunteering. Especially if they somehow manage to avoid too many disphoria cases. That might easily kill it.
Yeah, I've been working on the assumption that whatever process is used for the transformation means prevents body dysphoria. One theory of the dysphorias states that there's an internal map of all your body parts; dysphoria - and phantom limb syndrome - occurs when the map does not match reality. A drug which allows the patient to rewrite their internal maps as their body changes is at least as plausible as the rest of the story. I do like the Hollywood movie idea though... Who will write the first post-DE rom-com?
I was actually thinking more along the lines of something that'd actually appeal to potential transformees. So probably some adventure and action stuff?
Teenage boys are not people you'll catch with rom-coms. That's probably going to have an adverse effect. If I become a girl I need to deal with all this drama.
What you need is to make media that teenage boys want to consume normalize transitioning. That's how you're going to get more consider it. Once that's achieved you can start stacking perks and privileges on transitioning to get more and more consider it.
Otherwise is there some age limit on the gender change treatment? Because otherwise it might be interesting to see how the attitudes of the original generation changes once they hit their mid-late twenties.
Something ala "I still didn't have a girlfriend, fuck I just become one myself. And have all these nice perks. Really what does my dick give me apart from trouble? Peeing standing up? I do that sitting most of the time anyway..."
Beyogi - yeah, fair comment. Maybe a sex comedy though, a la American Pie? Or of course, that other media that teenage boys consume... porn. Maybe if you got pictures of young women taking off their clothes and put some kind of story beside it, where they tell the reader about how their transition went and how things worked out for them? Do you think something like that might work? I always assumed there was an age limit, partly because it makes for more interesting (imho) stories when they're younger and have less experience and power and stuff; the in-story explanation is that when you're older you have less exposure to male hormones, and that makes the process not take as well. The idea you suggest is interesting, but kind of implies that guys will 'fail into femininity' - can't get laid as a guy, I suck, guess I'd better go girl... which is really horrible from a feminist POV but interesting in terms of male psychology...
