Ugh... I'm not sure how I feel about this. On one hand it's quite horrible that a bloody custody agreement of the parents can force a kid to change gender (I wonder if there are cases with horrible consequences), on the other hand it's quite awesome. I wish I was him/her. Seriously, who'd want to choose if they can have both. I cheer for him/her.
The kid seems happy with the situation. I doubt they were forced into it. If you're living in the kind of world where you can change sex in a few hours after taking a pill, then people aren't going to be as hung up about switching sex. Glad you dug it!
I think the main reason why people are so bigotted about it is that it's instinctively seen as abandoning your social role. Women are supposed to pop out new childron for the expansion of the human race and men are to make sure they can do that savely/provide whatever necessary to do it. Kinda sucks for both...
So transwoman are probably seen as guys who want to abuse the female protection shield and transguys as women who don't want to do their godly duty in procreating the human race. Or something. An impotent man is also often seen as a half man so there you go...
I guess technology like this would really change it. Transwoman could pop out children - and seriously a girlfriend that actually has an idea what being a guy is like would be kinda cool - and for transmen... well, I think the same applies.
People would probably still be weirded out by him/her... It's probably pure human conservatism at work here. I guess it might take a few generations of gender changes that it would actually get normal. But at least the instinctive rejection should be lessened. I hope.
I don't know. We got from a position where homosexuality was illegal to one where gay people can get married in about 45 years. I wouldn't necessarily think that being freaked out by gender fluidity is innate or instinctive. And yeah I think most women would appreciate a man who knew what being a woman was like, and most men would like a girl who understood what being a guy was like. Though it'd make life hellish for lazy rom-com writers...
